This is B&W day for February and we are going to challenge you to create depth. A great way to achieve this is through layering your composition. Place a foreground element close to the lens and lead the viewer’s eye into a sharp midground subject with clear tonal contrast, then allow the background to fade softly into lighter or darker grays. Use light to carve shadows, revealing form and separation between planes. Focus on contrast, texture, and leading lines, letting highlights and shadows—not color—define distance, mood, and dimensionality. In my example photo, the layering of the tree branches really makes the bird stand out.
