Today we spotlight Lee Glasby

Lee's Bio:

I have always been interested in photography but didn’t practice enough, so I decided to start taking a photo a day back in January 2014, after been given a DSLR for my birthday in September 2013 and not really using it. I did struggle for the first couple of months to take a photo a day, but taking photos daily made me realise that have lots to learn, and I am still learning.  I have been living in Belgium since 1996 with my husband, We have four grown up children, two living in Belgium, two living in the United Kingdom and a dog, who will always sit in front of the camera for a treat!

How long have you been doing a 365 project?

I started taking a photo a day back in January 2014. I had been given a DSLR for my birthday the previous September.  The camera sat there on my desk on AUTO settings from that day onwards, just taking the odd photo now and again.  Once I started it took me a month to take my camera off AUTO and into MANUAL and I have been learning loads ever since.  I have missed odd days here and there, but this year is the first time I have taken a couple of weeks off, and it didn’t matter, I am still happy taking a photo a day.

What are your favorite prompts and not so favorite?

I think I prefer verb prompts as to nouns, as it means I can use my day to make the prompt work for me. Even though I what prompt is coming up because of my involvement in preparing the prompts, I never look at the prompts for the day until the morning.  I do love taking the prompt words and stretching them to fit into my day. With all of that, my favourite is colour week, even if it isn’t one of my favourite colours. I go around just finding everything that I haven’t seen before, it opens my eyes. My least favourite is the Picture Me prompts, which I find a bit of a struggle because I am still not happy in front of the camera.

What is your go-to camera gear?

I have a Canon EOS R5, I  just love the mirrorless technology.  I have just purchased a Canon SX70HS (a bridge camera to take on holidays instead of lugging all the heavy gear around) but there is still a learning curve. I have put it in manual, but it sometimes it doesn’t seem to want to do what it is told. I think I need to go back and read the manual again. My favourite lens in my 24-70mm it spends the most time on my camera.

What do you want everyone to know about a 365 project?

I want everyone to know that it is their project and not to compare themselves with others. Yes,  look at other people’s photo for inspiration... especially when you are having a difficult week in being creative. But, remember, it is your journey. You might be taking a photo a day for a different reason than someone else.  You might just want to document your day and they might be using it to be creative with their photos.  Also remember that the prompts are there to help not hinder... if you don’t like the prompt word, just stretch it to make your photo fit or completely ignore it (I am reasonably good at stretching). In the beginning I needed the prompt word to help me take a photo, these days I can just take a photo.

Where is your favorite place to photograph?  And do you have a favorite subject?

I live in a beautiful area of Belgium, and I love to take photos in the forest in the Autumn and the Winter. I find these times to be the best for the colour and the light.  In the Spring and Summer, the fields around here are pretty good if it isn’t too hot. I really do love taking photos when travelling to new places... after 12 years around here, I think I have taken most of the photos I can. Obviously, my favourite subject is Jasper! What sort of question was that!  LOL!
